Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself and your work?
I have always been passionate about singing since early childhood.I then performed as an actor/singer and musician for 14 years professionally. As I look back what I really loved about singing was the connection it created inside to my true Self and the way it connected me to others in a way that speech rarely did. In 1987 I discovered the power of the yoga of sacred sound and chanting which dramatically changed my life.It was the missing link for me to the ‘hole in the soul’. When I chanted I felt connected ecstatic and free and I knew without question that this was my true nature. It was always a contradiction for me growing ups as to why I could feel so free singing and then so constrained in speaking and social interaction.I was however articulate even eloquent ,however my words seldom seemed to flow from my inner voice. They were always words packaged perfectly to please everyone around me to protect myself from the continuous fear of criticism or attack. The power of chanting has transformed my relationship at the core and speaking is much easier now and particularly flows when I am facilitating sessions. I In 1990 I began offering workshops and events in sound and voice. This work has evolved over nearly 25 years years and as brought me to lead chanting and voicework seminars in corporations such as Cisco, M@C Saatchi, and Deutsche Bank plus Wandsworth mens prison and weekly sessions on the addiction treatment programme at the Priory hospital North London over 12 years. Since 2004 I have been resident Kirtan leader for Triyoga in London.I have released 3 successful chant Cds Nectarine ,Monsoon and Sounscape.
Your consultations look like very personal, out of your comfort zone experiences, how do you first break the ice with a client to put them at ease?
A client is only able to have a personal breakthrough if they feel at ease in the space provided by the facilitator.I have always placed a really high emphasis on providing a non judgemental and unconditionally loving and supportive space to work in. I also bring in a great sense of humour on occasion to break the ice as well as a deep sensitivity in my listening to what the client is actually dealing with and what they want to attune with to empower them in their lives going forward.
Can you tell us a bit more about Kirtan chanting?
Chanting or kirtan is one of the main stems of Yoga.Yoga means reunion with inner light The practice of daily mantra repetition and chanting is the pathway to connecting with the heart in other words to connect to the core of our being. The vibrations of the chant are transformative and they have the power to dissolve all spiritual, mental and emotional obstacles that stand in the way of us experiencing the bliss of our connection with our inner Self. The syllables of the chants belong inherently to all us of because they are the promordial language of the soul first discovered centuries ago by sages in India when in deep states of meditation.
Is your training a spiritual process, and what do non-spiritual clients think about such concepts as aligning with the movement with the Universe?
My background is the yoga of chanting which is spiritual but not religious. All clients are able to relate because the emphasis in each session is simply on universal connection. For some people it flows to focus purely on the word ‘energy’ which is easier to grasp. We focus on connecting with the most expanded energy within us that nourishes and inspires us and gives us the strength to move forward in life. Through the power of chanting we connect to this space and are naturally uplifted and liberated as we tap into this hidden treasure living right inside us where we can have an actual experience of our own blissful and free nature
Which writer/thinker has influenced you the most?
Hazrat Inayat Khan,Tukaram Maharaj and Rumi and Werner Erhard.
What's the best piece of advice you've been given?
To love people the way they are and the way they are not and to just ‘LET IT BE’
Could you name 6 Desert Island films/CD's?
1] The Mantra Om Namah Shivaya
2] The Disney cartoon Ratatouille.
3] The French film The Intouchables
4] The musical Half a Sixpence with Tommy Steele.

Interview with Michael James
This evening we have an interview with Michael James, author and speaker and the country's leading voice in applying the Law of Attraction. In October last year we did an interview with him and we wanted to hear more about his work and his upcoming workshop with Nikki Slade at the Monastery this coming weekend. We'd like to say thanks to Michael for answering our questions and keep an eye out on the blog for an interview with Nikki Slade later in the week!
You've hosted workshops in prisons, how does the Law of Attraction go down with the inmates?
It goes down well- because it is an empowering and freeing philosophy that doesn’t judge. I have found people in prison, in general, to be freedom-seekers who have felt confined by society and don’t know how to deal with their minds- so act out in a disconnected way and then, unsurprisingly, create a situation where they are confined physically. However there is a blessing in this- the restricted surroundings can sometimes lead to people ‘awaken’- and I met a lot of people like that who were actually very loving and caring people who were finding their way back into connection and love. It was an uplifting experience and very different to what you’d expect (if you’ve read about prisons in the newspapers or seen prison dramas on TV)
How do you deal with people who are disappointed that the Law of Attraction isn't a quick fix?
In my experience, quick fixes never work- which can be initially disappointing to the side of all of us which dislikes practice and ‘doing the work’. In a way people are relieved when I explain that it isn’t a quick fix- as this explains why this approach hasn’t been working for them up to this point and how, with right application and regular practice, it can and does work. My Success Stories are proof of this- hundreds of examples of mine (and The Law of Attraction Centre’s - which I co-founded) approach working. You can read about these on the website http://www. lawofattractioncentre.com/law- of-attraction-success-stories/
It says on your website you "evoke elements of Humanistic Counselling" how do you take the spirituality out of your work?
I don’t take the spirituality out really- although I might change my choice of wording depending on the audience, though I find I need to do that less and less as more people are becoming open to a sense of spirituality we all share. Humanistic Counselling is part of my approach as far as Carl Rogers’ (one of the more well-known contributors to Humanistic Psychology ) Unconditional Positive Regard in his Person-centred approach; the idea of allowing someone to be exactly as they are, which leads to change- and trusting that everyone has access to the answers within themselves. It’s a very spiritual approach too, if you think about it. In my opinion everything is spiritual- and you can’t take that out of life. Though sometimes I acknowledge the label ‘spiritual’ can be off-putting to some.
Do you ever find people that get "hooked" on the victim mentality and compulsively attend self-help workshops. if so how do you help them?
Yes- many people. I’m sure I was in this mindset once- in fact I definitely was; Self-help became just another way to promote my helplesssness, constantly looking outside for the answers. In this way, this question leads in well from the last one- as my work is all about inspiring people to connect to their own power which is the true purpose of all genuine "self-help" . I guess I can sometimes be quite direct with people when needs be. My confidence comes from doing over 500 events and seeing many people change their lives for the better. So I challenge the victim attitude- which isn’t really them at all but rather a false-self imposter, popularly known as the Ego.
Do you have a "go to" exercise for bringing us back to living in the moment that you could share with us?
Meditation and physical exercise (for example, a workout at the gym). My book Instant feeling Good is a concise book full of things you can do in the moment to shift your mood quickly. You can see more about it at www.michaeljames.be
Can you tell us how you and Nikki work together in "Sound and Focus to Align with the Law of Attraction?
Nikki’s work is amazing and she respects mine, too. We have both attended one another’s groups; myself and Nikki know each other very well- which helps- and I trust her approach. She brings in sound and gentle movement and I bring in meditation and written exercises. I find this approach works very well together. Our aims are the same; for people to get into touch with their empowerment and find their own inner voice (Nikki’s company is actually called Free the Inner Voice which explains this). The workshop will be spontaneous in many ways, sharing insights in the moment around some pre-arranged practices. I find this fluidity works well. I’m really looking forward to it.

Interview with Michael James
Michael James is the co-creator of the Law of Attraction Centre Founded in 2003 the centre provides workshops, retreats and coaching on the practicalities of the Law of Attraction. He is also an author, speaker and life coach. His talk at the Monastery this weekend is a great opportunity to see this highly in demand author and experience the Real Life application of the Law of Attraction. Many thanks to Michael for answering our questions. He can be found online at www.emergingjourneys.com
Real Life Law of Attraction - can you tell us a little bit about this talk?
This talk is about how to put the Law of Attraction teachings so many people have read about (through The Secret, for example) into practice in everyday life. It is one thing to know the theory- but to get practical results requires a different approach. So my talk will explain, from real-life experience of seeing hundreds of people successfully change their lives- how to get genuine transformation in the areas that interest us all- relationships, body image, health, life purpose.
Do some people apply the Law of Attraction without even realising it, are these the people we consider to be naturally lucky/happy?
Yes- many people apply the Law of Attraction naturally. It is a very simple teaching and sometimes too much study can be counterproductive... I believe it is something we all naturally know when we arrive on this planet; in fact children often apply it effortlessly- many of us lose that as we take on false beliefs of the world.
Can you tell us a little bit about Jin Shin Jyutsu? (Must admit to never having heard of that before )
Jin shin Jyutsu is an accupressure-like treatment. It is very relaxing and allows the person to open up to knowing what they and the body needs to come into alignment. It's all about letting go and stepping back and allowing the Universe to do its thing- which is the essence of my teaching in many ways.
Which writer/thinker has influenced you the most.
Esther Hicks, Louise Hay have been powerful teachers of mine- and there have been many others
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given.
A good piece of advice- I don't know about the best- is simply to 'Relax'. But of course that's sometimes more easily said than done. My work is about the 'how to relax' which is so important in applying spiritual teachings.
Would you name 6 “Desert Island” books or films (ones you would like if you were stranded on a desert island - for young ones who don’t know about Desert Island discs!)
Apart from my own forthcoming book, which I'm very excited about- I've learnt that keeping things simple is the best approach- so I would take simple books. A book by Louise Hay- possibly her latest You Can Create an Exceptional Life as it's an easy read and the Tao te Ching... Then I'd take something totally light and non-mind body spirit like some kind of art/photography book or perhaps a workout book. The final things would be recordings- I'd take an Abraham CD and a chant CD or meditation (Soundscape) by Nikki Slade. I would also take my own CD Relax, Release and Let Go. This is something I designed for creating calm no matter what is going on- so it would be a great thing to take with me.
